West Bengal has completed six phases of assembly elections whereas two phases of polling in Bengal still to go. CM Mamata Banerjee on Friday skipped a meeting of chief ministers with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The virtual interaction with PM Modi took to know the Covid-19 situation in states witnessing a higher burden of active cases.
In this meeting held for COVID cases surge Banerjee claimed that she was not invited to the virtual meeting. It was for this meeting and two others that the Prime Minister cancelled his visit to poll-bound Bengal and decided to address public meetings virtually instead. Addressing a press conference at hotel Citi Residency in Durgapur at 1 pm, Mamata Banerjee said, “I heard he is having some meeting today but we are not invited. I would definitely have attended it had I been invited. The West Bengal government has constituted a six-member task force headed by the Chief Secretary to monitor the surge in Covid-19 infections in the state. According to the state government’s health department, West Bengal had 7 lakh confirmed cases of infection as of Thursday. It is noted that earlier also Bengal CM had skipped virtual meetings chaired by PM Modi since she was on the campaign trail in the poll-bound state. In the same view BJP’s co-in charge for West Bengal, Amit Malviya tweeted “Everyone knows Mamata Banerjee’ poor commitment to manage Covid pandemic in Bengal.” He further said “She hasn’t attended a single PM-CM meeting called in recent past to work a common plan citing her campaign schedule. Even though she has failed WB, today’s meeting was only for high burden States.”
Currently, state has completed six phases of polling out of eight. While the remaining two phases are slated to take place on April 26 and April 29, respectively.
