Chennai: The Tamil Nadu police on Wednesday registered a case against over 5,000 people, including bjp state unit president K Annamalai. They were protesting against the Stalin government in the state demanding reduction in the prices of petrol and diesel. Police said the protesters were marching towards the state secretariat in Chennai without seeking permission from the government.

Bjp workers along with Annamalai had marched towards the state secretariat on Tuesday. It may be recalled that ever since the Centre cut central excise duty on petrol and diesel last month, the BJP has been demanding the opposition-ruled states to reduce taxes on fuel to provide relief to the people amid price rise. Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Annamalai said the state government had promised to reduce the prices of petrol and diesel in its election manifesto. The Centre has already reduced oil prices and now the state government should fulfill its promise.

"The DMK had promised in its manifesto that they will cut the price of petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 4 respectively. PM Narendra Modi has cut fuel prices twice. We demand the state government to fulfil the promise made in our manifesto. Meanwhile, in a significant move aimed at providing relief to people from the high prices of petrol and diesel, the Centre had on May 21 announced a reduction in excise duty by Rs 8 per litre on petrol and Rs 6 per litre on diesel.
