KOLKATA: The Trinamool Congress in West Bengal on Wednesday accused the BJP of misusing its power and pressuring the central agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED)  to draft charge sheets that can be later used to unleash "false" campaigns against party leaders.

It follows central agencies increasingly implicating leaders of the ruling party in various scams. Kunal Ghosh, the party's spokesman in West Bengal and the state's general secretary, has taken the lead on this issue. He claims that the BJP is forcing the federal agencies to include information in the charge sheet that will allow the party to launch deceptive campaigns and dishonest politics.

But he asserted that after the trials were over, all of these untrue allegations will be shown to be unfounded. Charge papers are merely filings from the relevant central agencies, not necessarily proof of the charges listed there, as Ghosh has noted. He claimed that "BJP is trying to abuse this."

The Trinamool Congress leadership has always argued that the BJP is in control of the central agencies and that this is the case. But this is the first time a state-level representative of the ruling party has made a significant complaint that the BJP is exerting pressure on the charge sheets substance.

Rahul Sinha, a senior member of the BJP and the former national secretary of the party, responded to the accusations by saying that the Trinamool Congress officials' past conduct supports the claims levelled against them.

"The CBI investigations are carried out in accordance with the Calcutta High Judicial's directives, and in some circumstances, the investigations are under court supervision. Daily court revelations demonstrate the seriousness of the corruption committed," he said.
