Lucknow: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has suffered another major setback ahead of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. Bjp's current MLA Jitendra Verma from Fatehabad assembly constituency in Agra district has resigned from the party on Sunday. With this, Jitendra Verma has taken over the reins of the Samajwadi Party. After which SP has entrusted the responsibility of the post of Agra District President to Jitendra Verma.

In his letter to BJP state unit president Swatanter Dev Singh, Jitendra Verma said, "I am resigning from the primary membership of the BJP. Please take the trouble to accept.' However, in his two-line letter, Verma has not given any reason to quit the party. Political experts believe that the BJP has fielded former MLA Chhote Lal Verma by not giving ticket to Jitendra Verma from Fatehabad seat for this election. This led to resentment among his supporters including MLA Jitendra Verma. That is why Verma has resigned from the party.

Jitendra Verma, who had earlier joined the Samajwadi Party, switched over to the BJP in 2014 and was nominated by the party from Fatehabad for the 2017 assembly elections. In this election, he defeated Rajendra Singh of samajwadi party by nearly 33,000 votes.
