NEW DELHI:  Exit polls by a number channels have forecasted a hung house in Meghalaya, a win for NDPP, backed by the BJP in Nagaland, the two states that went to polls on Monday, and seemed to oscillate between predicting a clean sweep for the BJP to a hung house in the state of Tripura, where a new party "The Tipra Motha"  may emerge as a potential kingmaker in the polls.

The crucial but tiny state of Tripura, which the BJP had grabbed from the CPI(M) in a surprise win in 2018, threw up exit results from three pollsters which varied substantially. Of the two, only IndiaTodayMyAxis indicates that the BJP would get between 36- 45 seats in the sixty-member assembly by garnering 45% of the popular vote, most of it in the plains where Bengalis live, giving it a spectacular win. The other two polls seem to suggest the BJP magic in Tripura has waned.

MEGHALAYA: At least two exit polls have predicted a hung house in Meghalaya, described as 'Scotland of the east', even though Chief Minister Conrad Sangma remained confident of victory.

The BJP is projected to consolidate its hold with a bigger share of seats: Its tally could go up to seven from only two seats in the State in 2018, says the aggregate finding of the three exit polls. In a tight race, Conrad Sangma's NPP (National People's Party) is likely to emerge as the single largest party with 23 seats. In 2018, the BJP had managed to cobble together a government with the NPP.

This time, it fielded candidates on all the 60 seats after a rift with Sangma's party. The Congress is projected to win six seats and the new entrant Trinamool Congress will open its account with 11. If BJP and NPP fail to sew up an alliance owing to recent differences, TMC could play an important role in government formation
