Panaji: The dates for assembly elections have been announced in five states including Goa. There are 40 assembly seats in Goa. Polling will be held in a single phase on 10th February. The results of which will be released on 10th March. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to field candidates in 38 out of 40 seats in next month's assembly elections in the state.

A senior BJP functionary said on Friday that the party will field candidates in 38 out of 40 seats. However, in two assembly constituencies namely Benalim and Nuvem, the party will not field any candidate on its symbol. In both these Assemblies, people traditionally vote for non-BJP candidates. There is a large Christian population.

The official further said, "After the approval of the Parliamentary Board, the formal announcement of candidates will be made after January 16. He said the party is holding a meeting of its core committee to put its final seal on the names of the candidates. It is led by the party's in-charge for the Goa elections and former Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis. BJP's Goa unit chief Sadanand Khet Tanawade, CM Pramod Sawant and others are also attending the meetings.”
