Kolkata: Violence erupted in West Bengal on May 2, 2021 after trinamool Congress (TMC) won the election results. The opposition, especially bjp supporters, was the target of the opposition. Abhijeet Sarkar and Haran Adhikari were among the BJP supporters who were killed. The apex court has issued a notice to the Bengal government while hearing a petition filed by his family members seeking CBI probe into the violence or setting up of a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

During the hearing of the petition, the fact also came to light as to the cruelty with which they were murdered. Abhijeet Sarkar's wife, who is also an eyewitness to the incident, told the court that "the mob tied a camera wire around his neck CCTV. Strangled. Beaten with bricks and sticks. They murdered him in front of his mother. Seeing her son being killed in front of his eyes, his mother fainted and fell to the ground". Abhijeet was dragged out of his house and killed on May 2. Just before the attack, he had come live on Facebook twice and informed about the attack by TMC goons. Appearing for the petitioners, advocate Mahesh Jethmalani told the Supreme Court that the body of the government is yet to be cremated. Therefore, a video recording of their post mortem should be done. The court was also told that those killed were supporters of the BJP. Meanwhile, the state administration and police remained mute spectators and promoted the perpetrators of the violence. He emphasized the need for action and court surveillance in these cases.

On the other hand, a PIL filed on bengal violence was also heard in the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, May 18, 2021. Meanwhile, the court said that victims of violence can lodge complaints with institutions like Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and Women's Commission (NCW). A five-judge bench also directed the commissions to immediately forward such complaints to the State Director General of Police. The high court is now scheduled to hear the matter on May 25.
