KABUL: Authorities say four different explosions hit Afghanistan's capital Kabul and the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, killing at least 14 people and injuring 32 others.

A blast swept through a mosque during prayers on Wednesday evening in Kabul's Kolola Pushta neighbourhood, killing five people and injuring 17., according to police spokesman Khalid Zadran, the incident occurred when people were praying in the Hazrat-e-Zekria Mosque.

Mohammad Asif Waziri, a spokesman for the provincial police department said that the bomb occurred about an hour after three consecutive explosions damaged three van-buses in PD 10 and PD 5 in Mazar-i-Sharif, killing nine people and injuring 15, according to reports.

The targeted buses were being carried along busy highways during rush hour in the northern city of Balkh, the province's seat.  So far, no one or group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The war-torn country has seen a string of attacks in recent weeks, allegedly carried out by the Islamic State terror group, which opposes the Taliban-led caretaker government.
