BANGALORE: In a big push toward sustainable public transportation, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is set to expand its fleet with 148 additional full-length electric buses under a lease agreement with TML Smart City Mobility Solutions, the subsidiary of Tata Motors. This move aims to enhance connectivity and affordability on Bangalore’s busy metro routes.
The agreement includes the supply, operation, and maintenance of 12-metre low-floor Tata Starbus electric buses over a 12-year period. BMTC will provide conductors and pay Tata Motors Rs.41 per kilometre, while Tata Motors will oversee driver deployment and fleet maintenance.
Shift from Midi Buses to Full-Length E-Buses
This decision marks a shift from BMTC's earlier plan to lease 120 midi electric buses, which measure 8–10 metres with a 900 mm floor height. The plan was abandoned after bids from vehicle manufacturers were deemed financially unviable. According to reports, the lowest bid for midi buses was about 30% higher than the costs associated with leasing low-floor, air-conditioned e-buses already secured by BMTC.
A Cost-Effective Collaboration
Tata Motors' subsidiary currently supplies 12-metre-long, low-floor, non-air-conditioned electric buses at a competitive rate of Rs.40.01 per kilometre. Meanwhile, Ashok Leyland’s subsidiary, Ohm Mobility, is providing 320 low-floor, air-conditioned e-buses at Rs.65.8 per kilometre. This partnership allows BMTC to manage operational costs while enhancing passenger comfort and addressing Bangalore’s growing transportation demands.
Supporting Environmental and Mobility Goals
With this expansion, BMTC is not only modernizing its fleet but also contributing to Bangalore's environmental objectives by reducing the carbon footprint of its public transportation system. The introduction of full-length electric buses will improve service efficiency and passenger experience, aligning with the city’s vision for sustainable urban mobility.
This initiative highlights BMTC's adaptability in balancing financial constraints with the increasing demand for efficient and eco-friendly public transportation. As Bangalore’s urban mobility challenges grow, the addition of these electric buses promises smoother commutes and enhanced accessibility on key routes.
