Jalgaon: The bodies of four Indian students who tragically drowned in the Volkhov River in Russia have been recovered and are being flown back to India, according to an official from the Maharashtra Government.

Jalgaon district collector Ayush Prasad stated that Russian authorities initially found two bodies within the first two days after the incident on June 4. The remaining two bodies were recovered this morning. The bodies will be flown to Mumbai before being transported to the students' hometowns in Jalgaon district.

The victims, identified as Harshal Anantrao Desale, Jishan Ashpak Pinjari, Jia Firoj Pinjari, and Malik Gulamgous Mohammad Yakub, were all between the ages of 18 and 20. They were students at Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University. Another student, Nisha Bhupesh Sonawane, survived the incident.

According to university officials, the students were taking a walk along the Volkhov River when they decided to enter the water. During the incident, Jishan Pinjari was on a video call with his parents. A family member recounted that Jishan's family was pleading with him and the others to leave the water when a strong wave swept them away.

Jishan Pinjari and Jia Pinjari were siblings from Amalner in Jalgaon district, while Desale hailed from Bhadgaon, also in Jalgaon district. The administration of Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University expressed their condolences in a message to the Indian envoy to Russia. Nisha Bhupesh Sonawane is currently under the care of medical staff.
