Karnataka Chief Minister  Basavaraj Bommai   along with city MLAs and Ministers, and officials  on Thursday visited many rain-affected regions, including J C Nagar, Nagavara, HBR layout, Hebbal, and STP plants, to examine the situation.

Some of the measures announced by the  Chief Minister Basavaraj to address the problems faced by rain-battered Bengaluru include developing valleys, desilting drains, removing bottlenecks and encroachment, and increasing the number and capacity of sewage treatment plants (STPs) across the city. Following the severe rain that lashed Bengaluru on Tuesday night and relentless rains that followed, several regions were flooded and residences were submerged in various sections of the city.

"There has been a lot of rain in a short amount of time, which has happened for the first time in almost forty to fifty years." It was 100 mm in some locations and has risen to 120 mm in others. After the visit, Bommai told reporters that the rain that should have fallen throughout the entire month of May fell in just four to five hours. He stated that this has resulted in inundation of low-lying portions of the city, and that these challenges during the rains have been persisting in the city for three to four decades, and that despite all efforts to address them, Bengaluru's growth is exacerbating the woes.

"Valley-by-valley development of six to seven valleys flowing through the city will be undertaken to address the difficulties, and a DPR has been produced for it. At this stage, Rs 1,600 crore has been cleared for it, and the work will begin very soon," he added.

Bommai noted that desilting work of major or primary drains, secondary and tertiary drains in neighbouring areas must be undertaken quickly, and that directives had been issued in this regard.
