The second-largest fuel distributor in India, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), will use its network of petrol stations to assist set up charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in the future. Over the next five years, the oil firm plans to invest over Rs. 1 lakh crore in order to prepare for a post-conventional fuel age.

The investment would help the company prepare for the transition phase when traditional fuels such as gasoline, diesel, CNG, and electric vehicles, as well as hydrogen and flex-fuel, will coexist, said Arun Kumar Singh, Chairman of BPCL

BPCL planned to develop a renewable power generation portfolio of 1,000 megawatts. This might aid the future EV charging infrastructure it wants to build. Biofuels and hydrogen will also be pursued by the firm. BPCL now has more than 19,000 retail locations across the country. In the near future, the gasoline retailer aims to turn roughly 7,000 of them into energy stations, including EV charging, flex-fuel, and hydrogen.

"BPCL has announced ambitious investment plans for the future. At the group level, we will invest more than Rs 1 lakh crores, primarily in improving petrochemical capacity and refining efficiencies (Rs 30,000 crore), gas proliferation ( Rs 20,000 crore), upstream oil and gas exploration and production ( Rs18,000 crore), and (fuel) marketing infrastructure ( Rs 18,000 crore) "Singh stated.

The chairman of BPCL further stated that the company is actively monitoring EV development in India and believes that two- and three-wheelers would lead the country's transition to electric transportation. "It's both a new business opportunity and a hedge against the danger of car fuel displacement," he added. BPCL presently provides electric vehicle charging stations at 44 of its petrol stations in major cities. In the following two years, the firm hopes to raise the number to 1,000. It has also begun a three-wheeler battery swapping pilot in Kochi and Lucknow.
