Brazil is experiencing a second wave of COVID-19 with a rise in cases and deaths since December. Brazil on Monday reported 627 deaths from corona in the last 24 hours, raising the death toll to 217,664. The health ministry said that tests detected 26,816 new infections, bringing the national caseload to 8,871,393.
Sao Paulo is the hardest hit, with 1,702,294 cases and 51,556 deaths, followed by neighbouring Rio de Janeiro, with 501,436 cases and 28,856 deaths. The nation has began mass vaccination against COVID-19 last week.Globally, over 64 million people have been administered shots of Covid-19 vaccine. The United States, the country worst affected by the virus, has administered the most vaccine shots in the world at 20.54 million.
Talking about India, With 9,102 fresh coronavirus cases reported in the last 24 hours, India saw the lowest surge in daily COVID-19 cases in nearly seven months. Up to 117 people died in this period when 7.5 lakh tests were conducted -- half of the September peak. The country has logged 1.06 crore cases since the beginning of the pandemic. More than 19 lakh healthcare workers across India have received shots of Covid-19 vaccine till January 25, the tenth day of the vaccination drive.
