Sao Paulo: Brazil reported fresh 24,605 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, and 462 deaths from Covid-19, the health ministry said on Friday. The nation has now registered 7,700,578 cases since the pandemic began, while the official death toll has risen to 195,411, according to ministry data, in the world’s third-worst outbreak outside the United States and India.
While Brazil celebrated the New Year without festivities and fireworks amid corona pandemic, local authorities were still struggling to prevent the public from flocking to beaches on New Year's Day. In order to avoid crowding In Riviera de Sao Lourenco, one of the most exclusive beaches in the southeast state of Sao Paulo, police even threw smoke bombs on the sand.
Brazil has the world's second-highest COVID-19 death toll, after the United States, and the third-largest outbreak, after the United States and India. Meanwhile, the US continues to be the worst-hit country with 20,462,501 cases.
