Brazil's president wants to make his son U.S. ambassador

RIO DE JANEIRO: Brazilian President Geri Bolsonaro has said he is considering appointing his son and federal representative Eduardo Bolsonaro as Brazil's ambassador to the U.S. "I think he can be appropriate for this position and handle matters in Washington in a better way," the news agency Xinhua quoted the president on Thursday as saying.

"We considered this possibility last year and brainstormed on its positive and negative aspects," President Jar Bosonar o'afar said. This appointment will require approval from the Senate Foreign Liaison Committee before passing the upper house. Eduardo Bolsonaro has said he would like to leave Parliament to become ambassador to the U.S.

Though he is currently the chief of the Foreign Liaison Committee of the House of Representatives, he has not actually held any diplomatic position before. There has been no ambassador since April at the Brazilian Embassy in Washington, the former ambassador was appointed by the president to the Brazilian Foreign Ministry in April.
