In a significant move to enhance European security, Britain and Germany have signed a new defence pact aimed at countering Russia's escalating aggression. The agreement, signed by defence ministers from both countries in London, marks the first such pact between these NATO allies, focusing on bolstering security measures amid ongoing tensions.

The pact comes in the wake of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022, creating growing unease among Ukraine and its European partners regarding the geopolitical landscape, especially with the upcoming U.S. presidential election in November.

UK Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the importance of strengthening European security and the UK's role within NATO. "In a more dangerous world, allies are our strategic strength and we must do more together," Healey stated during a press conference with German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius.

As part of the agreement, German submarine-hunting aircraft will operate from a military base in Scotland, providing enhanced surveillance of the North Atlantic. The two nations will also work collaboratively to safeguard critical underwater cables in the North Sea.

Additionally, the pact includes plans to develop advanced long-range strike weapons, exceeding the capabilities of the UK's current Storm Shadow missiles. German defense firm Rheinmetall is set to establish a factory to produce artillery gun barrels utilizing British steel.

The agreement also aims to improve cooperation between British and German forces stationed in Estonia and Lithuania, ensuring that land forces on NATO's eastern flank remain a formidable deterrent and are prepared for potential conflicts.

Both countries are also set to collaborate on the development of new land-based and aerial drones, further enhancing their joint military capabilities.
