Nirav Modi Judicial remand extended till 6 August by British court

During the hearing on Thursday, the accused fugitive diamond trader Nirav Modi's custody till 6 August. Nirav Modi had appeared for hearing in UK court in Punjab National Bank fraud and money laundering case. Since his arrest in March last year, he has been lodged in Wandsworth Jail in south-west London. India has requested Britain to extradite the 49-year-old jeweller. He is appearing in the court for 28 consecutive days. The 'call-over' hearing is going on until the second phase of his extradition trial starts in September.

During the hearing, Judge Arbuthnot told Nirav Modi, 'Nice to see you well.' When the judge was talking about extending his remand till 6 August. During the last hearing, Nirav Modi was sent to custody by a UK court till July 9. On 14 May, on the last day of the four-day hearing, the judge told Nirav, "I sincerely hope that by September the current restrictions on movement from jails will be relaxed and you will be able to come to court to participate in the proceedings."

ED has filed a lawsuit against Nirav and Mehul under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (law against taking money abroad illegally). Both businessmen have done a scam of about 14 thousand crores from Punjab National Bank. Both businessmen fled from India after the scam. And since they are caught, strict action is being taken on them. But no decision has been made yet.
