The Border Roads Organization (BRO) commemorated its 65th anniversary, with a focus on adopting advanced technology and techniques for faster project completion. Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane emphasized the significance of automation and mechanization for future endeavors. One of BRO's forthcoming projects includes the construction of the Shinkun La Tunnel, poised to become the world's highest tunnel upon completion.

During the celebration event held in New Delhi, the organization's successful operations in challenging terrains and adverse weather conditions were highlighted, along with its commendable contributions to relief efforts during natural disasters.

The Shinkun La Tunnel, spanning 4.10 kilometers, is set to commence construction soon. Once finished, it will surpass China's Mila Tunnel to claim the title of the world's highest tunnel, situated at an elevation of 15,800 feet.

Defence Secretary Aramane praised BRO personnel for their resilience and efficient performance in harsh environments, citing their crucial role in disaster relief, such as during the Silkyara tunnel collapse and Sikkim floods incidents.

Additionally, Aramane underscored BRO's involvement in the Vibrant Villages Programme, aimed at comprehensive development in select border villages. He emphasized BRO's pivotal role in bolstering national security and fostering socio-economic progress in remote regions through infrastructure projects.

Director General of BRO, Lieutenant General Raghu Srinivasan, extended greetings to all members of the organization, emphasizing BRO's commitment to national security, connectivity, and development across India.

The event witnessed the unveiling of a compendium on the Sela Tunnel and the presentation of several books. Excellence Awards were conferred upon BRO personnel for their outstanding contributions, with special recognition given to women achievers and casual laborers for their significant efforts.

From its inception with just two projects in 1960, BRO has evolved into a dynamic organization with 18 projects spanning 11 states and three Union Territories. It has established itself as a premier infrastructure construction agency, particularly in high-altitude and snow-bound areas.

Over its six-decade journey, BRO has constructed over 62,214 kilometers of roads, 1,005 bridges, seven tunnels, and 21 airfields in challenging conditions along India's borders and in friendly nations like Bhutan, Myanmar, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan.

In the fiscal year 2023-24, BRO completed 125 infrastructure projects worth Rs 3,611 crore, including the Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh. The organization aims to expedite crucial projects like the Mudh Airfield within two working seasons.

In recent years, BRO has experienced significant growth in budget expenditure, enabling it to undertake vital projects, accelerate infrastructure development, and enhance operational readiness. The organization remains committed to promoting gender equality and inclusivity, with women assuming key roles in critical projects, reflecting its progressive ethos.
