Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) MLA Kadiyam Srihari and his daughter, Kavya Kadiyam, who withdrew her candidacy for the Warangal Lok Sabha seat amidst the phone tapping controversy in Telangana, have officially joined the state's ruling Congress party on Sunday, ahead of the upcoming national polls.

The Congress's Telangana unit announced the induction of the father-daughter duo into the party via social media. Their joining ceremony was graced by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and state in-charge Deepa Das Munshi.

Kadiyam Srihari, who has represented the Ghanpur Station Assembly constituency since 2023, previously served as the Deputy Chief Minister from January 2015 to December 2018 under the leadership of then Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.

Kavya Kadiyam's decision to withdraw from the Lok Sabha polls as the BRS candidate for Warangal stemmed from the ongoing phone tapping scandal and allegations of corruption within the party. In a letter addressed to BRS president Chandrasekhar Rao, she cited these allegations as detrimental to the party's reputation, leading to her withdrawal from the electoral race.

The move to join the Congress marks the latest in a series of defections from the BRS. Previously, BRS MLA Danam Nagender, incumbent Warangal (SC) Lok Sabha member Pasunoori Dayakar, and Chevella BRS MP Ranjith Reddy crossed over to the Congress. Conversely, two BRS MPs, BB Patil and P Ramulu, shifted allegiance to the BJP.

These developments unfold against the backdrop of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Telangana, scheduled to be held in a single phase on May 13.
