New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has begun a significant two-nation visit to Brunei and Singapore, emphasizing the crucial role these nations play in India's 'Act East' policy. Modi's trip, scheduled from September 3-5, aims to bolster ties with these countries and the broader ASEAN region.

In a statement issued before his departure, Modi highlighted his historic visit to Brunei, marking the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the nation. "As we celebrate 40 years of diplomatic relations with Brunei Darussalam, I am eager to engage with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah and other royal figures to elevate our historical relationship," Modi said.

The visit is expected to enhance cooperation between India and Brunei across various sectors, including defense, trade, energy, space technology, health, and cultural exchanges. The focus will also be on exploring new areas of collaboration.

Following his time in Brunei, Modi will travel to Singapore on September 4. There, he will meet with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, along with leaders from Singapore's dynamic business community.

Modi expressed his anticipation for discussions aimed at deepening the Strategic Partnership with Singapore, particularly in advanced manufacturing, digitalization, and sustainable development. "Brunei and Singapore are key partners in our Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific Vision. I am confident that this visit will further strengthen our bonds with these nations and the ASEAN region as a whole," Modi concluded.
