BSF Seizes Rs 12 Crore Worth of Gold Along India-Bangladesh Border

Kolkata: During the sixth phase of voting in the Lok Sabha polls on May 25, the Border Security Force (BSF) intercepted a significant gold smuggling operation along the India-Bangladesh border in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Acting on intelligence, vigilant personnel from Border outpost Gunarmath, 05 Battalion under South Bengal Frontier, conducted a specialized operation in the village of Haldarpada. They discovered 89 gold biscuits of various sizes hidden in the residence of Alok Paul, a suspected smuggler.

The seized gold, weighing 16.067 kilograms with an estimated market value of Rs 12 crore, was found concealed in Alok Paul's home. According to AK Arya, DIG and spokesperson of South Bengal Frontier, the operation was launched promptly upon receiving information about the large consignment of gold. The suspicious house was cordoned off, and a thorough search was conducted in the presence of village dignitaries, leading to the discovery of the hidden gold.

Alok Paul confessed during interrogation that he had been approached by a Bangladeshi gold smuggler in March 2024. The smuggler offered him Rs 400 per day to stash the gold in his house, to which Alok agreed. Over time, multiple consignments of gold were delivered to his residence by the smuggler. On May 25, the smuggler entrusted Alok with 89 gold biscuits and bricks of varying shapes and sizes to conceal.

Alok Paul also disclosed that he had previously served a one-month sentence for gold smuggling and currently has a pending case in the Bangaon Court. The arrested smuggler and the seized gold consignment have been handed over to the Director of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Kolkata, for further legal action.
