The East Jaintia and West Jaintia districts of Meghalaya are considered to be extremely sensitive areas for cow smuggling from India to Bangladesh. BSF catches smuggled cows and hands them over to the police station near the border. The police either send the cows to a livestock conservation center or auction them. However, not a single livestock shelter center exists in Meghalaya.

Some livestock shelter centers are located near the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura and Assam. In Meghalaya, the police auction the cows caught by the smugglers along the border, which the smugglers repurchase and try to send across the border. With this variety, there is a cycle of smuggling of cows along the India-Bangladesh border. The incidence of cow smuggling in 2019 is higher than in 2018.
