India's Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said in the Lok Sabha that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is planning to set up 1.12 lakh mobile towers across India to start 4G services. Reports say that during the Question Hour, Vaishnav said that the domestic 4G network is being appreciated all over the world and has a core network, radio network and complete telecom equipment.

1 lakh towers will be set up in the whole country: The minister has said that BSNL has issued instructions to install 6000 towers immediately after 6000 towers and then finally 1 lakh towers across the country for 4G network. Simultaneously, Vaishnav said that telecom service providers are fiberizing their Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) installed on mobile towers and 7,93,551 BTS have been connected with optical fiber. This number is very less in comparison to the total number of mobile towers in the country. For the success of 5G and a better 4G experience, more towers need to be connected by fiber.

BSNL's 5G network may come this year: Prior to which, Vaishnav had said that BSNL can place its order for 4G equipment in April 2022. But till now no concrete confirmation about this has been made by the state-run telco. Along with 4G, BSNL is also thinking of launching 5G by the end of this year. BSNL was also working on 5G amidst 4G trials. An official of C-DoT (Center for Development of Telematics) had earlier said that BSNL is going to launch 5G NSA in 2022 and 5G SA in 2023.
