Being immersed underwater is such a sensory experience. Everything you can feel, hear and see comes into sharp focus. Your breathing becomes slow, purposeful and rhythmic. And you're suddenly aware of how your movements connect with each intake of breath.

Barracuda Point, Sipadan Island

When you dive into Sipadan Island, Barracuda Point is one of the main highlights there. Diving with Barracudas in the hundreds surrounding you is just an experience you will not likely forget. Every year, CNN Travel gets feedback from divers around the world and ranks the top dive sites. Barracuda Point is often voted as one of the top 10 dive sites in the world. Last year, it was voted number 1! This enormous, swarming tornado of shimmering silver is unique, and it’s why underwater photographers from all over the world come to Sipadan.

Maaya Thila - South Ari Atoll, Maldives

Great dive, protected as a Marine Reserve by the Maldivian government. Although grey reef sharks are also quite common at Maaya Thila, the smaller white tips are the centre of attention, often with dozens of them circling the reef. Maaya Thila is about 80 meters in diameter and can easily be circumnavigated in one dive – if the current is favourable – although it is not uncommon for divers to spend the entire dive in one area to digest the incredible diversity of marine life. The top starts at six meters and the reef edge drops from 12 meters to depths of 30 meters and more. Several coral outcrops occur on the northwest and south sides. There are many caves and overhangs all around the thila.

SS Thistlegorm Wreck, Egyptian Red Sea

SS Thistlegorm is easily the most-famous diving wreck of The Red Sea. Thistlegorm was a British transport ship used in World War II and on its way to the Suez Canal when it was sunk by a German airstrike in the middle of the night on October 5th-6th 1941. After German Intelligence (Abwher) heard of Allied troopships in the area, they sent a pair of Heinkel HE 111 aircraft to locate and destroy them. However, the largest vessel that they found was SS Thistlegorm, which they bombed, hitting Hold #4 near the rear of the ship. Thistlegorm sank in less than 10 minutes, but luckily due to the warm weather that night most of the crew were sleeping on deck and survived. All but nine men were rescued by HMS Carlisle, which was moored nearby.

1000 Steps, Bonaire

Even if you don't explore the sea life, recent travellers said the view from the top of the limestone steps is worth the trip. Visitors also said the water was unbelievably blue, and that there is some off-road parking available. Still, it may be easier to venture over on a tour bus. There are no diving schools located on 1000 Steps, so you must bring your own gear. And as long as you're carrying a nature tag, you do not have to pay to dive here.

The Blue Hole

Diving the Blue Hole in Belize is considered one of the top ten dive destinations in the world with its crystal clear, warm waters and diverse marine fauna. At the centre of the Lighthouse Reef system, about 60 miles off of mainland Belize City, lies one of the most fascinating scuba diving experiences on earth. Dive trips to the Blue Hole are offered year-round with liveaboard trips often the preferred method of diving here, as reaching the outer atolls and the Blue Hole on a daily basis is a long and sometimes uncomfortable journey.

Gili Islands

According to Traveltriangle, Gili Island is a collection of three islands off the coast of Lombok. It is so small that the largest of these three islands called Gili Trawangan can be cycled in just a few hours. Scuba diving is very famous on Gili Island. In fact, there are so many diving centres, and every day a new one pops up here due to the constant inflow of tourists in search of scuba diving lessons and fun. The island has a wide range of dive centres to choose from. These islands are famous for the variety of turtles and corals it offers. The water temperature here is mostly around 28 degrees and hence you see the line of divers queuing up here for fun. Moreover, there are around 25 diving sites with each offering a unique experience for the scuba divers with its slopes, walls, ridges, and canyons. To know more about where to go, here is a list of 7 places for scuba diving on Gili Island.

Micronesia

Diving here is big and bold, and Micronesia has a name for big-species encounters with the likes of mantas, sharks, dolphins, and whales. However, this doesn't detract from a wealth of vibrant hard and soft corals hiding a plethora of colourful reef species, and the great macro that can be found throughout the region's reefs and atolls. It is also home to arguably the best wreck diving destination in the world, with divers flocking from around the globe to dive to visit the mecca, Chuuk Lagoon. Micronesia is tailor-made for divers keen to get off the beaten track and experience phenomenal diving in one of the best scuba diving destinations in the world.
