Budapest: A man injured three police officers in a knife attack in Budapest late Thursday and one of them later died in hospital, according to a police statement on Friday. When police were called, the suspect was reportedly attempting to enter a flat in the Budapest apartment building.

According to police, the man stabbed three officers as they attempted to apprehend him, then tried to run into an alley, where a fourth officer shot him in the leg. No additional information was available, and police could not immediately be reached for comment.

On Friday, Viktor Orban, the prime minister, said on state radio that the government would assist the family of the slain officer. Orban withheld all additional details about the attacker or the circumstances of the attack.

By June 2022, knife crime in England and Wales is set to rise by 8% on the previous year.

In the 12 months to 22 June, there were 49,991 knife or sharp object offenses that were reported to the police. Since 2019, the percentage of knife crime offenses has increased at the highest rate.

There has been a 48% increase in knife crime in England and Wales since June 2012.

In the 12 months to March 2021, there were 235 murders involving a knife or other sharp object in England and Wales.

In London in 2021, 27 teenagers were murdered with a knife or other sharp object.
