AGARTALA: The Agartala-Kolkata via Bangladesh bus service, which had been discontinued since March 2020 due to the outbreak of Covid-19 and cross-border movement restrictions, reopened on Friday to make it easier ferrying of people from India's northeast to the rest of the nation.

The bus service, to be operated by the newly floated Royal Maitri International Bus Service, was flagged off by Tripura Transport and Tourism Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, accompanied by Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh diplomatic mission in Agartala Arif Mohammad and Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder.

The 40-seater passenger bus will run six days a week, barring Friday, according to Singha Roy. It will take four hours to get to Dhaka and 19 hours to get to Kolkata from Agartala. On Friday, a total of 28 passengers boarded the air-conditioned luxury bus, including 22 Indians and six Bangladeshis.

The bus service, according to Roy, will not only assist people from Tripura and other northeastern states get to Kolkata (for Rs 2200) and subsequently to other regions of India at a low cost, but it will also stimulate trade, tourism, and develop people-to-people contacts.

"Air, train, and waterway connectivity between Tripura and various Bangladeshi cities will be launched in the near future." We expect the railway service between Tripura and Bangladesh to begin soon after the work on the under-construction railway line is completed.
