The World Championship is held every year except the Olympic year. This year's Olympics in Tokyo have been postponed until next year due to the Covid-19 epidemic. This will be the first time that the World Championship will be held in the Olympic year. BWF President Paul-Eric Hoyer said that organizing the BWF World Championship in late November is in the best interest of the sport. Hoyer said, "The BWF and the Spanish Badminton Federation are confident that the rescheduled championship will be successful." This step allows badminton competition in the Olympics and world championships to be conducted with equal fairness.

The BWF said that no decision has been taken on the rest of the tournaments for the 2021 season.
