New Delhi: In view of the constitutional crisis in Uttarakhand and West Bengal, bye-elections for chief ministers are being considered in the coming two months. The election schedule may be announced later this month or early next month. These elections can then be held by the end of August or the first week of September.
In fact, it will be six months since Tirath Singh Rawat was CM in Uttarakhand without becoming a member of the Legislative Assembly. There will be confusion for the ruling party after September 10. In such a situation, the Commission may conduct a by-election to Tirath Singh Rawat. At the same time, the Hand Commission may also hold by-elections for West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee. In view of the covid crisis, by-elections are pending in many states, so the commission will keep them pending for the time being till favorable circumstances arise.
But to get the state governments out of the constitutional crisis, by-elections can be held only in the seats of Chief Ministers with utmost care and strictness. But at present, the commission seems to be in the mood to hold by-elections only in those seats where it is very important for the state government.
