New Delhi: Shiv Kumar 'Batalvi', born on this day in 1936, was a famous Punjabi poet who is best known for romantic poetry that has a brilliant depiction of the emergence of emotions, compassion, separation and lover's pain. He became the youngest writer to receive the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1967.

Shiv Kumar 'Batalvi' was conferred with the honour by the Sahitya Akademi of India for his epic drama Luna (1965) based on the ancient legend of Puran Bhagat, which is seen as a masterpiece of modern Punjabi literature and has established a new style of modern Punjabi legend. (a) Today, his poem is on a level playing field between legendary poets like Amrita Pritam and Mohan Singh of the modern Punjabi poetry, all of whom are popular on both sides of the Indo-Pak border.

His famous death wish has always been evident in his writings and as a result of liver cirrhosis caused by alcohol addiction at the age of just 36 on May 7, 1973, he was taken to his father-in-law's home in Kiri Mangyal in Pathankot and was the first Indian literature player to visit The baltic sunset forever.
