The voter turnout in Sohiong by-Poll in Meghalayas East Khasi Hills district was 27 percent around 10 am on Wednesday, with the polling process largely being peaceful. Many voters were seen queuing in front of polling booths even an hour before the commencement of voting at 7 am.
''There is a great spirit among electors and voting is picking up momentum. Reports are coming in that there are long queues in front of several polling stations,'' Kharkongor said, adding that ''No law and order issue has been reported thus far. Some issues regarding Electronic Voting machines were reported in some polling booths and those were fixed. The voting is underway in a free and fair manner,'' he said.
First 5 voters were presented with mementos and first-time voters were felicitated as a promotion for taking part in the polling, he said.
After casting their ballots in a mock polling place, voters planted trees.
3,328 polling places, 1,100 of which have been designated as sensitive and 28 as essential, are being used for voting.
Over 300 election workers are manning the 63 polling places.
Prior to the assembly elections held in the remainder of the state on February 27, a by-election was required due to
the passing of UDP candidate HDR Lyngdoh. Then, because of Lyngdoh's passing, voting in Sohiong was delayed.
There are six candidates running. They are all male. The candidates are: Sereph E. Kharbuki of the BJP, Synshar Lyngdoh Thabah of the UDP, Samlin Malngiang of the NPP, S. Osborne Kharjana of the Congress, Sandondor Ryntathiang of the HSPDP, and Stodingstar Thabah of the TMC.
The National People's Party (NPP) hopes to win the byelection, which would bring its total number of seats in the assembly's 60 members up to 29.
In support of the NPP candidate throughout the campaign, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Deputy CMs Prestone Tynsong and S. Dhar, and a dozen other ministers cited the advantages of the NPP's leadership.
