Bypolls: EC announced bypolls for 7 Rajya Sabha seats in 6 states on October 4

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission has announced bypolls for six Rajya Sabha seats across five states, rendered vacant due to resignation or death of the sitting MP, as well as a biennial election for one seat from Puducherry.  Polling for all seats shall be conducted on October 4.

The six Rajya Sabha vacancies where polls have been declared include two in Tamil Nadu and one seat each in West Bengal, Assam, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. While the two Tamil Nadu seats became vacant after MPs K P Manusamy and R Vaithilingam resigned, the resignation of Manas Ranjan Bhunia, Biswajit Daimary and Thaawarchand Gehlot caused the vacancies in West Bengal, Assam and MP respectively.

Gehlot is currently the Governor of Karnataka. Voting for this seat will be held on October 4.Nominations for this will be accepted from 15 to 22 September. Considering the majority in the assembly, BJP's victory in this seat is almost certain. Gehlot resigned on 7 July. His tenure was till April-2024. The Election Commission of India released the election programme for this seat on Thursday. After this, both the BJP-Congress started preparing. Both the parties are focusing on potential candidates.

 There are many new ministers in the Modi cabinet, whom BJP can send to Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh quota , while Congress can field a leader from the state itself. BJP state president VD Sharma said, regarding the candidate for the vacant seat, the central leadership will decide. There are a total 11 Rajya Sabha seats in Madhya Pradesh. One seat is vacant. Out of the remaining 10 seats, 6 seats are occupied by the BJP, while 4 are occupied by the Congress.
