Cabinet approves inclusion of cooperatives in GeM marketplace portal

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet announced on Wednesday that cooperatives will be included in the government's e-marketplace site (GeM). Cooperatives, in addition to the government, will be able to procure through the GeM site with this move.

"Inclusion, efficiency, and transparency are the goals of the GeM portal. If the cooperatives are incorporated in the GeM, they will have a platform to sell their products on. Businesses have seen increased growth with this portal "Anurag Thakur, Minister of Information and Broadcasting, said the move will benefit over 8.54 lakh registered cooperatives and their 27 crore members.

"Self-Help Groups, MSMEs, and small company owners have reaped significant benefits since the launch of the GeM (Government e-Marketplace) platform. Various government PSUs, ministries, depts, autonomous bodies, and local bodies began purchasing via the GeM portal ", the Union Minister stated. Thakur claims that GeM's revenue has increased from 6,220 crores in 2017-18 to one lakh six thousand crores in 2021-22.

"GeM focuses on diversity, openness, and efficiency. GeM is a platform for artisans, weavers, SHGs, startups, women entrepreneurs, and MSMEs. Accounting for the last four years shows that procurement increased from Rs 6220 crore in 2017-18 to above Rs 1.06 lakh crore in 2021-22 "Anurag Thakur said.
