New Delhi: The Central government approved the provision of fortified rice in government-run food schemes on Friday, in a landmark cabinet move aimed at combating malnutrition and poor health among women and children.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the plan. FCI and state agencies have already bought 88.65 LMT of fortified rice for supply and distribution, said the Union minister Anurag Thakur during a press conference.

The programme will primarily focus on malnutrition in mothers and children. Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the initiative on India's Independence Day in 2021.

The entire cost of rice fortification (about Rs 2,700 crore per year) would be borne by the government as part of the food subsidy programme until June 2024, when it will be fully implemented. There will be three phases to the scheme's implementation.

For the initiative's complete execution, the following three phases are planned:- Phase-I: Covering ICDS and PM Poshan throughout India by March 2022, which is currently being implemented.

Phase-II: All Aspirational and High Burden Districts on stunting (total 291 districts) by March 2023, including Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) and Other Welfare Schemes (OWS) in all Aspirational and High Burden Districts on stunting (total 291 districts).

Phase-Ill consists of the above-mentioned Phase II plus the remaining districts of the country by March 2024.
