A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed, requesting that a central agency conduct an investigation. The case is currently being investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the state government.

The Calcutta High Court had earlier taken cognizance of the Birbhum tragedy, in which eight persons were burned to death after Trinamool Congress leader Bhadu Sheikh was killed. Meanwhile, the arson in Birbhum has sparked political upheaval in the state.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has requested that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee resign and that the event be investigated by central agencies. According to Locket Chatterjee, a BJP MP from Hooghly, about 20 persons were killed in the arson, but "no one knows the exact figure because no one is permitted to reach Birbhum."

The West Bengal government has been asked to provide a thorough report on the arson event by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The measure was taken after a nine-member delegation of BJP MPs from West Bengal met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to request his assistance and action against the crime's perpetrators.
