Delhi, July 26: Cambridge Analytica data breach case where the data mining and analysis firm was involved in the breach of Facebook user’s privacy and sought their personal information got a new move when The central government wrote to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and asked for an investigation in the matter.
Ravi Shankar Prasad, the Minister of Electronics & Information Technology on Thursday in Rajya Sabha informed that last evening the ministry sent a demand to probe further in the matter of “action on the misuse of social media and fake news”. He said it has “entrusted the issue to be investigated by the CBI for possible violation of Information Technology Act, 2000 and IPC,”
Further, it was stated that the notice sent by the Indian government to Cambridge Analytica was not responded by the firm “Therefore, it is suspected that Cambridge Analytica may have been involved in illegally obtaining data of Indians which could be misused ” Economic Times quoted the Parliamentary saying.
The government also informed that in the case where the data mining firm compromised many user’s data, then the notices were sent to the indulge firms where “ Facebook responded that they will streamline their internal processes regarding the handling of personal data. They stated that the case of Cambridge Analytica it was a case of breach of trust. They promised to take various other steps to ensure that such breaches do not recur. Cambridge Analytica, on the other hand, gave an initial response that data of Indians was not breached but this was not in conformity with what was reported by Facebook”
