OTTAWA – On Thursday, Canada approved the Novavax Covid-19 vaccination for people aged 18 and up, making it the country's sixth Covid-19 vaccine after AstraZeneca, Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson and Johnson.

According to reports, Health Canada stated in a news release that the vaccination is 90 percent effective in preventing symptomatic Covid-19 and 100 percent effective in preventing severe disease.

While further evidence is needed, preliminary and exploratory data suggests that the vaccination, named "Nuvaxovid," does produce neutralising antibodies against the Omicron variant, according to Health Canada. According to the news release, it is a protein-based vaccination that is given in a two-dose protocol of 5 mcg per treatment, 21 days apart.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated last year that the government had reached an agreement with Novavax to produce the vaccine in Montreal, Canada, once it was licenced for use in the country.
