Srinagar: On February 8, BJP workers organized a candlelight march at Srinagar's Lal Chowk to protest the killing of two civilians from Punjab's Amritsar on February 7. The civilians were fatally shot by suspected terrorists in the Shaheed Gunj area of Srinagar on February 7 evening. Amritpal Singh, one of the victims, was killed on the spot, while Rohit, the other victim, succumbed to his injuries on February 8.
During the march, a BJP worker expressed to the media, "The terrorists cannot tolerate the return of peace and normalcy in Jammu & Kashmir. They are envious of the unity among locals and the development initiatives supported by the Centre." Jammu & Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also condemned the terror attack, expressing shock and sadness over the loss of innocent lives. In a social media post, he extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
Former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah echoed similar sentiments, stating that the incident exposed the reality of the situation in the Union Territory, contrary to official claims. Abdullah expressed regret over the loss of lives and emphasized the need for a concerted effort to address the security challenges facing the region.
