A major incident occurred when a fire broke out in a carpet factory near Kohand on the National Highway, completely ashes as machines, including goods kept in the godown for export, were badly engulfed in flames. The fire took place around 1.30 pm last day. At that time, some labourers were working in the factory, which created havoc. They tried to control the fire but the fire broke out and soon engulfed other areas including the godown. On receiving information, half a dozen fire brigade vehicles from Karnal and Gharaunda rushed to the spot and the fire was doused after about two and a half hours of hard work.
It is learnt that the fire was so raging that the shed and walls of the godown collapsed. The shed of the godown was resting on the iron angle, and they also came down. Eyewitness employees Dharampal and Subhash said the fire was probably caused by a short circuit. As soon as the fire broke out, the workers were evacuated and the security was fully informed. The fire was then doused by fire ministry trains.
Damage could have been caused in nearby units as well: According to the information received, the factory's account manager DK Sharma said that the finished goods have been kept in the factory godown, which was to be sent for export. But before that, all the ashes were destroyed in the fire. Some machines were also burnt. It has caused loss of crores of rupees and also loss. He said that if the fire had not been controlled in time, the fire would have reached the units around the godown and could have caused a much bigger loss. The matter has been reported to the police. The police are investigating.
