The issue that began in 1990s, is finally brought to an end by the Supreme Court. The apex court announced its verdict on the Cauvery river issue prevailing between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu since a long time.

The bench of two judges allocated Karnataka and Tamil Nadu an amount of water from the river Cauvery with the former being ordered to give 177.25 thousand million cubic feet to the latter. The judgement increased the water share for Karnataka.

These two states approached the Supreme Court after the Cauvery River Water Dispute Tribunal’s decision to allocate (yearly) 419 thousand million cubic feet of water to Tamil Nadu while the figure for Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry was 270 thousand million cubic feet, 30 thousand million cubic feet and 7 thousand million cubic feet respectively.

The new verdict has reduced the share of Tamil Nadu and given that to Karnataka. According to it, 14.75 thousand million cubic feet will be deducted from Tamil Nadu’s share and added to Karnataka’s share.

Karnataka has celebrated the judgement while Tamil Nadu is left disappointed. Kamal Haasan and Rajnikanth who hinted at their debut in politics a few days ago said they were shocked and disappointed. AIADMK said it will fight for water while the opposition DMK asked the ruling government to resign.
