New Delhi: The CBI has been successful in arresting the absconding accused of the Bhopal gas scandal after four years. The name of the accused arrested is Shakeel Qureshi. The media has been quoted by CBI officials that the accused was absconding since 2016. Qureshi was arrested from Nagpur in Maharashtra on Tuesday. He was produced in the District and Sessions Judge's Court in Bhopal on Wednesday.

The health of the arrested Qureshi was bad. Therefore, he was brought to court through an ambulance. The family had filed a bail application citing the poor health of the accused. The ambulance of the accused was brought to the Adalaya premises and Qureshi did not descend. When informed by CBI, District and Sessions Judge Rajendra Kumar Verma along with his colleagues got up near the ambulance. He got bail due to ill health.

According to the lawyer for the accused, Qureshi was in the position of shift in-charge during the gas leak at Union Carbide Factory. He was on trial and was convicted by a lower court. An appeal was made against this decision in the district court. The court file showed that he had not appeared in the court since 19 February 2016.
