NEW DELHI: Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi's Chief Minister, was formally arrested by the CBI on Wednesday following an order from the Rouse Avenue Court. The arrest unfolded during a hearing related to the excise policy case, where Kejriwal appeared accompanied by his wife, Sunita Kejriwal.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had taken up Kejriwal's petition challenging the Delhi High Court's interim stay on his bail in a money laundering case linked to the liquor excise policy. The probe agency, CBI, had recently questioned Kejriwal at Tihar Jail and recorded his statement concerning the excise policy.
Responding to the developments, a lawyer from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) criticized the Modi government's actions, accusing them of vindictiveness. The lawyer emphasized that despite Kejriwal's cooperation throughout the investigation, the government opted for his arrest, reflecting a persistent bias.
The Delhi High Court, in its recent ruling, stayed Kejriwal's bail order issued by the trial court, citing procedural shortcomings and inadequate appreciation of evidence. The decision to grant an interim stay on Kejriwal's bail without a final verdict was deemed unusual by the bench.
