New Delhi: A special CBI court has sent a summons to former Uttar Pradesh CM Kalyan Singh to appear before the court on September 27 in the Babri Masjid demolition case. Special Judge SK Yadav, after taking cognizance of the Bar Association's information on the pending CBI petition, issued a summons to Kalyan that his term of Governor has ended in the first week of September.

Apart from Singh, former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani, Murali Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharti and others are also being accused of conspiring to demolish the 14th-century building on December 6, 1992. The case is being heard on a daily basis. The court had asked the CBI whether BJP leader Kalyan Singh was still holding a constitutional post. The CBI sought time from the court twice, claiming that they had not yet received the relevant documents. The court issued summons after giving necessary information by the bar association.

The CBI had filed a plea that charges were leveled against Singh in 1993 and the Supreme Court ordered on 19 April 2017 that he could not be tried on trial due to the powers conferred on the Governor by Section 361 of the Constitution. The apex court, however, granted an exemption to the CBI to summon Kalyan Singh as soon as he leaves the post. All the accused in the case are out on bail due to instructions given by the apex court on 19 April 2017.
