CBI registers case against Cadbury India, accused of tax evasion

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a case against Cadbury India Private Limited (now Mondelez Foods Pvt Ltd) and central excise officials on charges of corruption. The agency has accused Cadbury of corruption and misrepresentation of facts. According to CBI, the company has reportedly been charged with corruption for obtaining a factory license in Himachal Pradesh.

The CBI said that the agency had conducted a preliminary enquiry which found that the company had wrongly furnished and bribed facts and documents to reap the area-based tax benefits at Baddi in Himachal Pradesh. After which the case has been registered. The CBI has arrested 12 persons in the case, including the names of two central excise officers. Cadbury India Vice President Vikram Arora and Director Rajesh Garg and Jailboy Phillips have also been arrested.

Agency sources said, Cadbury India has taken advantage of excise duty of Rs 241 crore for its unit of 5 Star and James Nirman in Himachal Pradesh in connivance with central excise authorities. According to sources, the irregularities took place between 2009 and 2011.
