New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed an FIR on Wednesday in connection with the alleged poaching and killing of an elephant in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The news comes after the death of a 30-year-old elephant in the Sirumugai forest range in November 2020 due to electrocution.

The CBI has named one Murugesan as the accused in the case in the FIR. According to the FIR, he is a banana plantation owner who erected the fence illegally to keep wild boars away from his crops. According to the FIR, he used a power supply from his motor pump room to electrify the fence.

The FIR includes a copy of the wildlife offence report from October 18 of last year. According to the report, the elephant was attracted to the owner's banana plantation, where it came into contact with the electrified fence and died. On the basis of a report submitted by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, the Madurai bench of the Madras high court had asked the CBI to investigate the larger nexus of middlemen, poachers, and kingpins in these killings in February of this year (WCCB).
