CBI raids Congress MP Karti Chidambaram's house, case of taking bribe from Chinese nationals

Chennai: The CBI team on Saturday raided the Chennai house of Karti Chidambaram, son of senior Congress leader and former union minister P Chidambaram. A team of officers is searching his house. Police are outside the gate. The CBI is investigating allegations of taking bribes in the case of issuing visas to 263 Chinese nationals in 2011. At the time the visa was issued, Karti Chidambaram's father P Chidambaram was home minister at the Congress-led Centre.

Karti Chidambaram has also appeared before the CBI in this case. This is the case when Karti's father P Chidambaram was the Union Home Minister. The CBI FIR said the case pertains to a top official of Vedanta group company Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL) for re-issuance of visas to 263 Chinese personnel, alleging that a bribe of Rs 50 lakh was paid to Karti Chidambaram and his close aide S Bhaskararaman. At the same time, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is investigating the money laundering case related to it.

The ED, in the last week of last month, assured the Delhi High Court not to take any punitive action against Congress MP Karti P Chidambaram till July 12. Karti's anticipatory bail plea in the alleged Chinese visa scam case is scheduled to come up for hearing on July 12. At the request of Karti and the ED's counsel, the court listed the matter for further hearing on July 12. Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, representing the ED, has verbally assured the court that nothing will happen till July 12.
