The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered an FIR on Thursday following an order from the Calcutta High Court to investigate allegations of extortion, land grabbing, and sexual assault in West Bengal's Sandeshkhali. Sources indicate the case involves charges of sexual harassment, land grabbing, and violence. The FIR names five accused individuals, whose identities have not been disclosed, but they are believed to be influential people. Additional details are pending.

The Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI investigation into the allegations on April 10, citing the need for an "impartial inquiry" in the interest of justice and fairness. The CBI received numerous complaints via an email address it set up for such cases. Last week, a ten-member CBI team visited Sandeshkhali to investigate the alleged crimes against women and land grabbing. Sandeshkhali, located in Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, has gained attention since the beginning of the year due to protests led by several women against local leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates, accusing them of sexual assault and land grabbing.

Shahjahan went into hiding shortly after the allegations surfaced, drawing criticism for the Trinamool Congress for initially protecting him. Shahjahan evaded capture for 55 days until Bengal Police arrested him on February 29 in connection with an attack on an Enforcement Directorate (ED) team in Sandeshkhali on January 5. He was subsequently suspended from the Trinamool Congress for six years. After the Calcutta High Court's directive, Bengal Police transferred Shahjahan's custody to the CBI, and he is now in jail.
