CCEA approves continuation of mission for oceans

New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs  (CCEA) on Wednesday approved the continuance of the Ministry of Earth Sciences' umbrella programme 'Ocean Services, Modelling, Application, Resources and Technology (O-SMART)' for implementation from 2021 to 2026 at a cost of Rs 2,177 crore.

Ocean Technology, Ocean Modelling and Advisory Services (OMAS), Ocean Observation Network (OON), Ocean Non-Living Resources, Marine Living Resources and Ecology (MLRE), Coastal Research, and Operation and Maintenance of Research Vessels are the seven sub-schemes that make up the scheme.

The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad, the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Goa, the Centre for Marine Living Resources and Ecology (CMLRE), Kochi, and the National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR), Chennai, as well as other national institutes, are implementing these sub-schemes.

OSMART is a multidisciplinary continuous project, and the ongoing comprehensive research and technology development activities will contribute to the nation's capacity building in the oceanographic sector on a global scale. According to a Cabinet declaration, the Ministry's fleet of oceanographic and coastal research vessels provide needed scientific support for the plan.
