The Muslim holy month of Ramazan begins from today i.e. 6 june 2016 for most of the world's billions of Muslims. While most know Ramazan as a monthlong fasting holiday, one Arizona organization is using the Muslim holy month as an opportunity to provide financial and emotional support to refugee families.

According to Islamic tradition, Ramzan is the holiest month of the entire year, a month of blessing and brings with it a fresh wave of festive cheer. It lasts for 28 to 30 days depending on the sighting of the moon.

During this monthlong period, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk. They will abstain from eating or drinking anything, even water, from about 4 a.m. until late evening.

With Ramzan starting off, it is a special time of the year, when you will find certain localities in cities like Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata coming alive with festive fervour, especially in the evenings.

Fasting during Ramazan is one of the five pillars of Islam, along with the Muslim declaration of faith, daily prayer, charity and performing the hajj pilgrimage in Mecca.

Muslims celebrate the end of Ramazan with a three-day holiday called Eid al-Fitr which will take place on July 6.
