Marie Curie, who was born on November 7, 1867, died away at age 67 on July 4, 1934. She was a pioneering radiation researcher who was a Polish scientist and chemist. As the first woman, recipient of the award in two different fields of science, and recipient of the award twice, Curie holds several firsts. She and her husband, Pierre Curie, became the first married couple to share the prestigious prize when they each received one. Five Nobel Prizes have been won by the Curie family collectively.

On November 7, 1867, Curie, the youngest of five children, was born in Warsaw, Poland. Her parents were renowned educators. She carried on her father's teaching legacy of mathematics and physics, two fields that Curie eventually studied. Curie was educated in the local schools and received some scientific knowledge from her father. She and her sister joined a clandestine educational organisation called "Flying University" because they were unable to enrol in a traditional university due to their gender.

Curie travelled to Paris in 1891, where she enrolled in the University of Paris and continued her studies in physics, chemistry, and math. She earned two degrees in mathematical sciences and physics. She began met her husband in 1894, and they were wed a year later. They collaborated while pursuing their mutual love of physics and science. Curie created procedures to remove radium from the radioactive waste after Henri Becquerel discovered radioactivity in 1896. This allowed her to research radium's properties. She and Pierre were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1903 for their efforts.

Curie succeeded Pierre as Professor of General Physics at the Faculty of Sciences after his death in 1906. She was the first woman to hold this role, among many other firsts in her life. At age 66, Curie died from aplastic anaemia, which she most certainly contracted from radioactive exposure. She made a lasting impact on the scientific community and left behind a scientific legacy.
