According to a ministry, the Mizoram govt is now undertaking a census of Myanmar citizens who sought safety in the state after leaving their homes during the military takeover in February last year.

The government has resolved to properly document Myanmar nationals through census, according to state home minister Lalchamliana. "We want to keep good documentation of Myanmar citizens," he added, adding that censuses are presently being performed by district administrations where refugees are kept.

He also stated that the state administration will give identity cards to all Myanmar people who have sought asylum in Mizoram due to the country's present political upheaval. Around 2,000 additional refugees have allegedly reached the state in the previous week as a result of severe battles between Myanmar army and civilian defence forces in Chin state, according to Lalchamliana.

"Around 18,000 Myanmar citizens are presently finding refuge in various regions of Mizoram as a result of this fresh migration," Lalchamliana added, quoting police records. He stated that the state government had so far given Rs. 80 lakh to help the refugees on humanitarian grounds because the Centre was unable to assist them directly.

Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Serchhip, Hnahthial, and Saitual are six Mizoram districts that share a 510-kilometer international border with Myanmar's Chin state.

Since late February last year, when the military junta took power in a coup on February 1, the northeastern state has been dealing with an inflow of Myanmarese refugees. Official sources said Myanmar citizens are seeking refuge in all eleven districts, with Champhai sheltering the most at 7,810.

According to reports, the second-highest number is 3,761 in Mizoram's Lawngtlai district, while 1,916 Myanmar nationals are now residing in Aizawl district. According to the sources, Lunglei district has 1,236, Siaha district has 1,103, Hnahthial district has 1,732, Serchhip district has 347, Kolasib district has 123, Saitual district has 53, Khawzawl district has 64, and Mamit district has 244.

The Myanmar nationals were accommodated in community halls, schools, NGOs' and villages' relief camps, and many were also sheltered by local relatives, according to the report. The majority of Myanmar nationals who have fled to Mizoram are from the Chin ethnic group, which shares ethnic relations with the Mizos.
